Fireworks are Cool

Some trial and error yielded a few pretty good results.  I experimented with different stops from f22 down to f5.6.  I settled for f8.  Timing for holding the shutter open is critical.  I used my cable release on Bulb.  Too short and you don’t get any trails.  Too long and the fireworks explode over each other and you get a mess.  Most shots were about 4 seconds.

It’s Almost Never Too Dark

I was just about to leave when the color just kept on getting more intense.

Night Light

I am really having fun with the Hi ISO capability of the D3S.  Walking around at dusk shooting handheld is fantastic.

What’s up Doc?

Spring is nearly here and the critters are out.  Found four deer in broad daylight having an afternoon snack by the roadside.

Having fun

It’s so much easier to shoot a model when she is having as much fun as you are.

Anybody need head shots?

It ain’t over yet

Nothing like a little frost in the morning to let you know that winter is still around. The sun was shining directly on the windows and the crystals were melting while I was shooting them.

Use a Gel

Gels are a good way to enhance a photo. I attached a red gel to my SB800 and played around a little.  I tried highlighting the background, and highlighting the model as well.  [swfobj src=”https://barrycainphotography.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/0089-5×7-copy.swf”]

Hair highlighting worked the best.

One Light

[swfobj src=”https://barrycainphotography.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/onelight.swf” align=”center” allowfullscreen=”true”]

Sometimes the simplest solution is the best.  I was messing around with my Lastolight EZYbox and an SB900.  I also had an SB800, some reflectors and gels.  While using more than one light gave me some interesting effects, this is the shot that worked.   Yes, the hair could be highlighted a bit more but I guess it’s the models expression that was the best in the bunch.  All the cool lighting in the world isn’t worth it if the model doesn’t look great.
