Texture

texture-

Black and White is where I started and has always been a love of mine.  The texture of the image always seems to come out better in Black and White.   You can easily be distracted by color shades and saturation.  Death Valley is a great place to work B&W.  Many of the areas are very monochrome.

Zabriski

zabriski

Beautiful sunrise at Zabriski point.  Lots of shooting can be done way before the sun comes up at this location.  The rock textures are great.  Example will come tomorrow.

Lonely Hikers

lonely hikers

Many of the dunes are just covered in tracks at Eureka.  But it’s worth the hike out to find areas that are pristine or have had a lone hiker or two.

It’s a Big Place

big

Death Valley is bigger than Yellowstone.  Fortunately you can drive faster here than you can in Yellowstone.  The salt basins are enormous.  Most of the sights you want to see are 30 minutes from each other.

Badwater Basin Death Valley

Badwater

Badwater Basin is 282 feet below sea level.  Some of the hottest temperatures every recorded on earth have been here.  These are salt formations on the flats.  Nikon D4 14-24mm

Eureka Dunes

dunes 1

The Eureka Dunes at sunrise.  It’s quite a trek from the parking lot.  Thursday morning, nobody was there. The weekend was crazy hard to get a shot with nobody in the frame no matter how early you get there.

Starry night

starry

Eureka Dunes at Death Valley.  The stars were out and so was the moon.  The glow in the distance is Las Vegas.  Couldn’t see it with the naked eye.  A 15 second exposure tells the story.

Italy – Rome

I recently went to Italy for a two week vacation.  Not specifically for photography but hey, had to do a little shooting.  Our first stop was Rome.  How to OD on religious art, go to Rome.

9/11 Memorial

Had a chance to visit the 9/11 memorial on NY last week.  They have created a small park with two waterfalls in place of the twin towers.  It’s a beautiful area and you can view the new towers under construction from the memorial.  The names of the people lost are engraved on the sides of each pool.  Tickets are free, but you have to order online and pick a time of arrival. 911memorial.org
